In the "Fog of War" Robert S McNamara basically said that if the US had lost the war, himself and General Curtis LeMay would have been charged with war crimes. As for Iwo Jima all I can say is that 24,000 people lost their lives over an Island. Perhaps it would have been better to toss a coin instead to determine who was going to hold it?
