The good, the bad and the ugly sources of stock market advice.

May 16th, 2008 · Greg Atkinson · No Comments

There appears to be an ever increasing number of stock market related websites and no shortage of stock tips and market advice available to us all. But who should we listen to, and where are some good sources of stock market insights?

Investment Themes for 2009 and beyond.

The current downturn in the world markets presents us with an opportunity to review or develop our investment strategy for the next few years. For some people it may mean a major overhaul such as moving from stocks to real estate, while for other it may mean just a realignment of stocks in a portfolio. In any case, it is a worthwhile exercise to review your investment strategy from time to time even if just to confirm what you actually own.

Food Prices and Biofuels.

You have to love the tree hugging environmentalists, now that they have convinced most people the earth is getting warmer because of human activity they are now out to ruin the biofuel industry which is curious, as environmentalists use to be happy with the concept of renewable fuel sources.

Can we prevent further turmoil in the market?

As the casualty list from the stock market fall grows, the call for tougher regulation becomes louder. But will tougher laws and regulation really help? Can we prevent investors losing money via financial scams and corporate failures?

A time to reflect.

Sometimes, and I mean only sometimes, I look back at things I have written and they actually make sense. So today I will indulge myself and review some of the comments I have made in editorials I have written for the shareswatch blog.  For in uncertain times, it is often useful to spend a moment or two reflecting on the past.

Are we near the bottom?

One thing all investors would like to know is if the Australian Stock Market has reached a bottom and when things will start to recover. Like everyone else, I cannot predict the future but I can at least outline what I think (hope) will happen and how I am positioning my own investments.

Times like these.

Well it is hard to stay optimistic after stocks take yet another tumble and even harder when you look at the charts for 2008. It has been pretty much all downhill this year and the doom and gloom crowd are having a great time telling everyone they saw it all coming. (mind you they saw it all coming in 2006 and 2007 as well as I recall)

Sol’s Magical Mystery Tour of Telstra.

February 25th, 2008 · Greg Atkinson · 3 Comments

You have to pay credit where credit is due and is appears that Telstra’s CEO, Sol Trujillo, is a master of the rules followed by many management consultants and top level executives. Thus he was able to impress a number of analysts and financial journalists with Telstra’s recent half year financial results, when in fact there was not much to be impressed about.

Much Ado About Whaling.

Oh my, how self righteous we Australians are these days. It seems the good economic times have given us the confidence to take the high moral ground on a range of issues while covering one eye so that we do not look in our own backyards. Nothing could illustrate this point better than Australia’s antics in regards to whaling.

Where to for the Australian Economy?

Let me first start by saying I think any predictions about the future are best described as forward looking guesstimates. So before reading on, please remember this is just my view and I am not aware of any ability I have to see clearly into the future.
