An extended stock market market downturn such as the one we are experiencing now provides long term investors with an opportunity to gauge how well companies have been able to deal with harsh economic conditions.  So today let’s have a look at four consumer spending related Australian listed companies and see how they have fared over the last five years.

Charts Review: ASX All Ords, CBA, PPT, AGK, GMI & GOLD.

March 4th, 2012 · 2 Comments

So far this year the Australian stock market had managed to edge slowly upwards and the All Ordinaries Index appears poised to settle above 4400 during the next week or so. Although the risks of a major Eurozone economic implosion appear to be fading, the signs are that the economy in China continues to slow and it appears the U.S. economy is still struggling. The situation in China in particular is likely to have a major impact on where the Australian stock market heads next over the following few months.

Australian stock market outlook & forecast for 2012.

January 8th, 2012 · 27 Comments

The ASX All Ordinaries Index and S&P/ASX 200 Index finished much lower than I expected in 2011, so this makes me somewhat reluctant to go on record and make an Australian stock market forecast for 2012. However the process of looking at the various economic data and trying to guess where the market will end is a useful one, so foolishly I will outline once again my Australian stock market forecast for the year ahead.

Oil Prices, the Baltic Dry Index, Stock Markets & Gold.

December 7th, 2011 · 34 Comments

The interest rate cut yesterday by the Reserve Bank of Australia suggests that finally the RBA understands that the Chinese economy will not keep expanding at a rapid rate while its major trading partners are struggling. But even if the Chinese economy slows more than most economists expect this is unlikely to send the global economy back into a GFC-like slump.

The ASX All Ordinaries and the Commodities Bubble.

October 5th, 2011 · 8 Comments

Prices for hard commodities such as copper, iron ore & coal have risen strongly over the past decade and are now trading well above their long term historical averages.  This in turn drove the ASX All Ordinaries Index to a bull market high in 2007 and has helped put some support under the market ever since.  But is it realistic to expect high commodities prices will keep propping up the Australian stock market?

Charts review: ASX All Ords, ANZ, RIO, DJS, HVN & DMP

June 11th, 2011 · 3 Comments

Another week is over and the ASX All Ordinaries Index has finished just above 4600 and the S&P/ASX Index just below 4600.  Here we are again at the bottom end of a fairly narrow trading range in which the Australian stock market has traded within for more than a year. It’s enough to make you sleepy.

The Global Economy, Baltic Dry Index, Gold and China

April 18th, 2011 · 10 Comments

We are almost through a third of 2011 and the mood across global markets appears to be decidedly downbeat.  The bullish voices of late 2010 have now faded and even the Reserve Bank of Australia and Federal Treasurer are sounding cautious. But don’t be fooled by the talk that recent events have caused the global economy to face headwinds because the reality is that 2011 was always going to be a tough year.

A quick look at 52 week high and low stock prices: August 2010

August 11th, 2010 · 10 Comments

Today the Australian stock market is slipping back towards 4500 as once again investors are becoming concerned that the feeble global economic recovery is faltering. But rather than focus on the short term movement of the stock market let’s once again look at the 52 week share prices of some commonly held Australian stocks.

For the record: March 2010

March 19th, 2010 · 18 Comments

Since August 2009 I have not been that active in terms of buying or selling stocks simply because I have not found the share market that interesting. On one hand it is hard to find stocks that offer enough value to make me part with my cash and on the other, the market has not rallied far enough to entice me to sell much.

A quick look at 52 week high and low stock prices: October 2009

October 29th, 2009 · 10 Comments

Now that it appears we are in the midst of the long awaited stock market correction it seems an ideal time to check how the 52 week stock prices have been tracking for a number of ASX listed stocks as this may tell us if the rally of the last 7 months is running out of steam.

The Shareswatch Random Portfolio: 1st Anniversary

October 25th, 2009 · 2 Comments

One year ago I put together a fictional portfolio of stocks by simply using a random number generator and a list of shares that makes up the S&P/ASX 200 Index. Now 12 months later it is time to look at how these stocks have performed and see if they can tell us anything about the overall state of the Australian stock market.

Australian stocks indicate the economy is still struggling.

October 14th, 2009 · 4 Comments

The Reserve Bank is clearly now back in the mood to fight inflation and the recent decision to rise interest rates confirms that they believe the Australian economy will fare well in 2010. But if their economic outlook is correct, then why haven’t stocks rallied further?

No time to party yet: Australia’s GDP data is not that good.

September 3rd, 2009 · 6 Comments

It seems that many financial journalists and commentators have decided that Australia has escaped a recession, and that the economy is doing just fine now based on the  June Quarter GDP figures that have just been released. But I wonder how many of them looked into the GDP data in detail and spotted the warning signs?

A global economic recovery does not mean business as usual.

August 24th, 2009 · 16 Comments

After the strong stock market rally today I think we can safely say the bear market of 2008-2009 is now well and truly over. The ASX All Ordinaries & ASX 200 are still clearly trending upwards and commentators who were predicting a Global Depression just a few months ago have started adjusting their forecasts.

A quick look at 52 week high and low stock prices: March 2009

March 30th, 2009 · 8 Comments

In September last year I looked at the 52 week share price highs and lows for a range of well know stocks trading on the ASX. As luck would have it, a few days later Lehman Brothers went under and stock markets around the world tumbled. But now that the dust has settled (I hope), it might be interesting to go back and look at these companies and see what has happened to their stock prices since September 2008.

Dealing with a battered stocks portfolio in a bear market.

March 12th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Most investors in the stock market are today looking at some nasty losses in their portfolios. Some investors may have already sold shares and incurred losses while others may be nursing stocks that have lost 50% or more of their value since late 2007 and hoping they will recover some value. The question that confronts all of us now is: what do I do from this point onwards?
