Stock market & investment trends for 2012 and beyond.

January 16th, 2012 · 7 Comments

At the start of last year I did not update my Australian stock market trends simply because I thought the market was basically going nowhere. This year however I feel it is worth looking at some interesting sectors again in an attempt to pick out some areas where investors might be able to find bargains and position themselves for the next bull market.

Australian stock market outlook & forecast for 2012.

January 8th, 2012 · 27 Comments

The ASX All Ordinaries Index and S&P/ASX 200 Index finished much lower than I expected in 2011, so this makes me somewhat reluctant to go on record and make an Australian stock market forecast for 2012. However the process of looking at the various economic data and trying to guess where the market will end is a useful one, so foolishly I will outline once again my Australian stock market forecast for the year ahead.

Market volatility, debt & the commodities slide.

October 21st, 2011 · 35 Comments

Over the last six months stock markets globally have become more volatile as Europe and the U.S. struggle to revive their economies.  To make things more complicated many advanced economies have racked up so much debt during the ‘good times’ that they now don’t have the capacity to spend their way out of trouble.  There will be no quick fixes and the situation is worrying enough to even rattle the commodities bulls.

Review of S&P/ASX 200 Sector Indices: XNJ, XDJ, XMJ, XPJ & XJO.

September 21st, 2011 · 13 Comments

In the midst of all this market madness it might be useful for investors to sit back and look at what various sectors of the Australian stock market have being doing over the last ten years to see if we can spot any emerging trends.  We all know for example that the resources sector has been generally kind to investors over the last few years but will it continue to be a strong performer in the years ahead?

A decade in review: the ASX All Ords, BHP, HVN, RIO, WOW & more.

August 29th, 2011 · 8 Comments

Often it is useful to step away from looking at the daily movements of the stock market and review what has happened over the last decade.  This won’t exactly tell investors which stocks will do well during the next 10 years, but it does show which trends have moved the market to where it is now.

When might the ASX All Ords pass the last bull market high?

July 25th, 2011 · 24 Comments

The Australian stock market is still a long way below the last market high reached in 2007 and so I can’t help wondering when we might see the ASX All Ordinaries reach a new market high.  Perhaps it will just be a few years time before the market recovers lost ground, or maybe it’s going to be a long wait before share market investors see stocks once again post gains year after year.

ASX All Ordinaries, ASX 200, ETF Gold & Dow Jones charts for 2010

January 7th, 2011 · 7 Comments

Now that 2010 is behind us, let’s look at some stock market charts for last year and see if we can pick up any trends that might be of some use  as 2011 unfolds. Do the charts reflect a booming Australian economy and set the scene for a bull market in 2011? Or should we be a little more cautious?

Economic indicators, the Australian economy and the stock market

December 15th, 2010 · 16 Comments

As the year has progressed I have noticed that my view of the Australian stock market and economy has become increasingly at odds with most of the mainstream market commentators back in Australia.  Whereas they see reasons to be optimistic and feel the economy is robust, I feel the situation is quite different and believe the Australian economy is dangerously unbalanced and possibly primed for a nasty correction.

Charts analysis: ASX 200, All Ords, BHP, GMI, ETF GOLD and Oil & Gas

October 11th, 2010 · 5 Comments

The Australian stock market has been trading in a fairly narrow range since hitting a yearly low in late May, however over the last few weeks it has pressed above 4600 and we could see it move further towards 5000 in the weeks ahead.  In addition some interesting trends are emerging in terms of gold, oil and gas prices and and they might be giving us a good indication of where the market is heading next.

Stock market charts: ASX All Ordinaries, CBA, BHP and HVN

September 4th, 2010 · 4 Comments

If you are confused about the conflicting  reports regarding the Australian economy and outlook for the stock market you are not alone.  Much of this confusion is caused by financial journalists who one day are talking about a double dip recession and then suddenly switch to chirping about a robust Australian economy once some positive economic data appears.

The ASX All Ordinaries, Dow Jones and the Baltic Dry Index.

June 23rd, 2010 · 14 Comments

Stock markets around the world have had a very volatile run over the last few weeks with everything from debt levels in Europe to housing statistics in the U.S.  giving scaring investors. But during times of market volatility it is important to try and spot the longer term market trends and not get carried away by sensational headlines or daily market swings.

Yesterday the ASX All Ordinaries finally closed above 5000 and many stock market investors will now be wondering if this is the start of another period of rising stock prices, or simply the prelude to another downwards correction. Well the answer to both questions  in my opinion, is yes.

Shareswatch Australia Blog: hits & misses of 2009

January 8th, 2010 · 2 Comments

It is time once again to put my ramblings, rants and ruminations for the previous 12 months under the spotlight. Did I correctly spot any stock market or economic trends or should I be standing in the corner with the dunce cap on for most of 2010?

Stock market & investment trends for 2010 and beyond.

January 3rd, 2010 · 2 Comments

Another year, another decade and time once again to look at our shares portfolio and perhaps review our positions. Although the global financial crisis has been tough for investors the fact is that the Australian stock market did bounce back in 2009 and if history is any guide then we are likely to see it finish higher in 2010.
