Over the last few months media commentary regarding the Australian economy has turned decidedly gloomy. The wonders of the mining boom are now being questioned, the U.S. and European economies matter again and people are starting to wake up to the reality that an economic strategy that basically relies on China dragging Australia along for the ride might not be that clever.

Quite clearly the debate regarding the Resources Super Profits Tax (RSPT) in Australia and abroad has not died down. Despite what the Government would like people to believe, it is not just the foreign mining companies that are opposed to this new tax, but also small Australian mining companies, business owners and the public in general.

Let’s get one thing clear from the start, attempting to rush a massive spending package through parliament with the minimum amount of scrutiny is not good economic management. It simply means that the people charged with managing our national economy have been caught unprepared and for that single fact alone, they should be held accountable.
