In the 1960’s the Japanese rightwing had a problem. The leftwing was arguing strongly that Japan’s postwar economy badly needed access to the markets and raw materials of China, North Korea and the Soviet Union if it was to survive (in prewar years it had depended heavily on China and the Korean peninsula for both).

From the moment the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) concept was floated I had an uneasy feeling about it and unlike a lot of recent anti-ETS converts, I have voiced my opposition to this legislation for many, many months. Simply put, I don’t see the logic in trying to help the planet with a tax.

Does anyone remember Rudd’s great talk fest in April 2008 grandly called the Australia 2020 Summit? Did anyone get excited about the contents of the final report, complete with lovely graphics and pictures? Was there some careful analysis and discussion of the ideas raised during the Summit in the mainstream media?
