Are Australian stocks poised to trend lower?

May 8th, 2012 · 36 Comments

There is nothing particularly exciting about the Australian stock market these days. The malaise which has essentially paralysed the government seems to have spread to the business sector which in turn is slowly sucking the lifeblood out of the share market. It’s unlikely that things will improve soon and so investors should prepare themselves for the market to move lower over the next few months.

Almost daily the mainstream finance & business media churn out headlines regarding the stock market that would imply that stocks are either surging to new highs or falling to new lows.  The truth however is much more boring and so today I will try and have an emotion-free look at what the S&P/ASX 200 Index has been doing over the last few years & months.

Are Australian stocks set to ride another bull market?

January 27th, 2012 · 23 Comments

Recently the markets appear to have settled somewhat and the Australian stock market has steadily been heading higher so far in 2012. Could we be seeing the early signs of another bull market taking hold or are we about to see another sharp correction take the ASX All Ordinaries back down towards 4000 and perhaps lower?

Australian stock market charts review: market close 2011

December 31st, 2011 · 12 Comments

The Australian stock market has finished trading for the year with the ASX All Ordinaries & S&P & ASX 200 both closing around 15% lower for 2011. It has been a disappointing year for share market investors (yet again) with even the mining stocks stumbling lower over the last 12 months. Many investors might be under the impression that the market slid back over the last few months of 2011, however the Australian stock market has been trending down since as far back as April.

The Global Financial Crisis, the G-20 & S&P/ASX 200 Index.

November 5th, 2011 · 13 Comments

The continuing debt crisis in Europe is a reminder to investors that we are still in the midst of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) which first gripped the markets back in 2008.  The G20′s first cunning plan to spend their way out of trouble didn’t do much to fix the root causes of the GFC and so they are gathered once again for another talkfest which at best, might give the markets a kick upwards for a few days.

Why is the Australian stock market unable to rally?

May 3rd, 2011 · 4 Comments

Despite the best efforts of many analysts to talk up a stock market rally the Australian share market continues to move sideways with the ASX All Ordinaries and S&P/ASX 200 both unable push clear of the 5000 level.  But should this worry investors or is the market now simply reverting back to the long term trend?  Also what factors might be at play that are preventing a major market rally?

The Global Economy, Baltic Dry Index, Gold and China

April 18th, 2011 · 10 Comments

We are almost through a third of 2011 and the mood across global markets appears to be decidedly downbeat.  The bullish voices of late 2010 have now faded and even the Reserve Bank of Australia and Federal Treasurer are sounding cautious. But don’t be fooled by the talk that recent events have caused the global economy to face headwinds because the reality is that 2011 was always going to be a tough year.

Charts analysis: ASX All Ordinaries, ETF Gold & Dow Jones

March 23rd, 2011 · 3 Comments

Over the last few weeks the tragic events in Japan and the political unrest in the Middle East have shown just how fragile the Australian stock market is. Investors appear ready to move quickly out of shares and shift funds to less riskier assets when they sense trouble. This suggests to me, that people don’t quite believe that the Australian economy is as robust as many market commentators would have us believe.

Charts review: All Ords, Telstra, Qantas, BHP & Woolworths

February 18th, 2011 · No Comments

Now that the ASX All Ordinaries Index has broken through and closed above 5000, more than a few market watchers seem to be quite bullish about the prospects for the Australian stock market.  But will the share market rally from here or will another correction roll along and push it below 5000 yet again?

Australian stock market outlook for 2011

January 4th, 2011 · 26 Comments

As another year starts it’s time for me to make another stock market forecast, one which I will probably regret making in just a few months time. Generally speaking, I expect that 2011 is not going to be particularly kind to the Australian economy and therefore my Australian stock market forecast is not going to make market bulls very happy.

Economic indicators, the Australian economy and the stock market

December 15th, 2010 · 16 Comments

As the year has progressed I have noticed that my view of the Australian stock market and economy has become increasingly at odds with most of the mainstream market commentators back in Australia.  Whereas they see reasons to be optimistic and feel the economy is robust, I feel the situation is quite different and believe the Australian economy is dangerously unbalanced and possibly primed for a nasty correction.

Stock market charts: ASX All Ordinaries, CBA, BHP and HVN

September 4th, 2010 · 4 Comments

If you are confused about the conflicting  reports regarding the Australian economy and outlook for the stock market you are not alone.  Much of this confusion is caused by financial journalists who one day are talking about a double dip recession and then suddenly switch to chirping about a robust Australian economy once some positive economic data appears.
