At the start of last year I did not update my Australian stock market trends simply because I thought the market was basically going nowhere. This year however I feel it is worth looking at some interesting sectors again in an attempt to pick out some areas where investors might be able to find bargains and position themselves for the next bull market.

A quick look at 52 week high and low stock prices: December 2010
December 31st, 2010 · 8 Comments
After some promising gains in the first part of 2010 the Australian stock market closed down today to finish the year basically unchanged. In plain English the share market essentially did nothing in 2010 and so if the Australian economy is really booming, then this is not being reflected in the performance of the ASX All Ordinaries or S&P/ASX 200.

Is the BHP Billiton share price telling us something?
January 13th, 2010 · 5 Comments
One of the best investments an Australian investor could have made over the last 10 years would have been to buy a large chunk of BHP Billiton (ASX: BHP) stocks. This is simply because BHP shares have outperformed gold, listed or unlisted property and most ASX listed blue chip stocks I can think of. But have BHP shares now rallied too far and what does it’s share price tell us about the demand for commodities?

Shareswatch Australia Blog: hits & misses of 2009

It is time once again to put my ramblings, rants and ruminations for the previous 12 months under the spotlight. Did I correctly spot any stock market or economic trends or should I be standing in the corner with the dunce cap on for most of 2010?

Stock market & investment trends for 2010 and beyond.
January 3rd, 2010 · 2 Comments
Another year, another decade and time once again to look at our shares portfolio and perhaps review our positions. Although the global financial crisis has been tough for investors the fact is that the Australian stock market did bounce back in 2009 and if history is any guide then we are likely to see it finish higher in 2010.

Investment Themes and Trends

The current downturn in the world markets presents us with an opportunity to review or develop our investment strategy for the next few years. For some people it may mean a major overhaul such as moving from stocks to real estate, while for others it may mean just a realignment of stocks in a portfolio.

December 31st, 2009 · 2 Comments
Well 2009 is almost over and although stock market investors did it tough in the first quarter, overall the ASX All Ordinaries and S&P/ASX 200 posted healthy gains of around 30%. This means stocks & shares were in fact a good place to have your money over the last 12 months.

Trying to take in the big picture global economic view.
November 17th, 2009 · 4 Comments
When it is hard to make sense of what is going on with the global economy I feel it is often best to try and remove the noise created by endless stock market reports, economic surveys, financial forecasts etc. and try and focus on facts not fiction. It also helps to put aside people’s opinions (including our own), relax and calmly assess what the data is really telling us, as opposed to trying to use this data to predict the future.
Government debt, inflation and interest rates.

The tentative signs of a global recovery (albeit a weak one) are becoming stronger each day and people who predicted a global depression have faded from view. So the Australian economy is poised for growth again and everything is back on track right? Well not quite.

Gold prices and the stock market rally.
July 23rd, 2009 · 5 Comments
Despite howls of “it’s a sucker’s rally” from some market commentators, Australian stocks have gradually pushed up since bottoming out earlier in the year. While nobody can say for sure what will happen over the next few months a look at the gold price and some stock market charts can at least tell us what is happening now.

Farewell FY08/09 and stock market outlook for FY09/10.
June 22nd, 2009 · 2 Comments
Well another financial year is drawing to a close and for most stock market investors the last 12 months have not been very kind. But it is now time to contemplate how the next financial year may unfold and think about any opportunities or threats we may face as investors.

A quick look at 52 week high and low stock prices: March 2009
March 30th, 2009 · 8 Comments
In September last year I looked at the 52 week share price highs and lows for a range of well know stocks trading on the ASX. As luck would have it, a few days later Lehman Brothers went under and stock markets around the world tumbled. But now that the dust has settled (I hope), it might be interesting to go back and look at these companies and see what has happened to their stock prices since September 2008.

The Australian home prices debate Part 2: Why prices may not collapse.
March 21st, 2009 · 171 Comments
In Part 1 of the Australian home prices debate I looked at some of the factors that could drive home prices down in Australia. Now in Part 2, I shall outline the other side of the debate and consider the arguments that support the view that the Australian residential property market will generally withstand the fallout from the global financial crisis and not follow prices down in a similar way to the U.S. and U.K.

The real estate market in Japan – outlook for 2009.
October 21st, 2008 · 4 Comments
As most people will probably know, real estate prices in Japan collapsed in the early 1990′s as part of the damage caused by the bursting of the infamous Japanese bubble economy. Sadly for the Japanese economy, there was no magical recovery and the dizzying prices seen in the late 1980′s were never seen again. Prices dropped for years and Japan entered a period often labelled as “the lost decade”. (although the term seems a little harsh to me)
