It’s the stupid Australian economy, stupid.

Over the last few months media commentary regarding the Australian economy has turned decidedly gloomy. The wonders of the mining boom are now being questioned,  the U.S. and European economies matter again and people are starting to wake up to the reality that an economic strategy that basically relies on China dragging Australia along for the ride might not be that clever.

Has the Australian economy peaked?

Last year when I dared to suggest that the Australian economy was unbalanced and that 2011-2012 could be a period of economic contraction the mainstream financial reporters were churning out “miracle” economy stories. Back then they were obsessed with telling their readers how the mining boom would shower riches across the Great Southern Land, but today many of them have started to sound a lot more cautious.

Australian stocks rally to the bottom again.

The Australian stock market has finally rallied back up to where I believed the bear market bottom was last year but although this is a positive sign, the Australian economy faces a number of challenges in the years ahead and these might well make it difficult for the market to surge ahead in 2010 and beyond.

LNG billions: is Australia getting a good deal from the Gorgon Project?

Recently there has been a lot of joyous reporting about the massive Gorgon Project and the expected boost that the Australian economy will get from  multi-billion dollar LNG export contracts. However is Australia really getting a good deal for it’s LNG and as a nation, are are we tapping into all the benefits we should be getting from this massive project?
